Reset a Windows XP PasswordFrom Wired How-To Wiki
Reset image by furnari via Flickr If you've lost your computer's password, then you're left with a very expensive and very useless brick. That is, unless you figure out how to crack your own password. First, a word of advice: Keep a file with all of your passwords in a convenient, secure location so you don't end up here again. OK, 'nuff said. If you forgot your Windows XP password, there are a few different methods that allow you to regain access to your computer, but none of them actually reveal your password — they simply let you change it to another combination. Note: These methods should work for any Windows XP Home or Pro Edition. This article is part of a wiki. If you have a Wired account and remember the password, log in and teach others how to remember theirs too.
Using a Password-Reset DiskUsing a password reset disk is the simplest way to get back in business if you forgot your Windows XP password. Of course, it assumes that you had the forethought to create a password reset disk when you set up your computer. Steps

With Ophcrack, you can create a live CD that has a bootable operating system that will let you start Windows. It is always a free download.
In the FutureThere are already a variety of computers available with built-in fingerprint scanners. With these devices, a small sensor reads your fingerprint (or other biometric information, like your eye) and logs you into the computer. As this biometric technology gets cheaper, you will find it on more and more machines. This way, you'll never have to remember a password again, so long as you still have your fingers attached. |
